JewelryArtistMagazine.com

Unlike Vogue, the Jewelry Artist website is much simpler. The website serves to support the material found in the magazine through interactive blogs featuring additional projects to try at home.

The online content from the October 2010 issue is small. The only clickable links are advertisements and galleries of the contributors. None of the feature articles are available online, forcing those truly interested to purchase the magazine to view the full content. Because the setup of the articles includes step-by-step pictures, readers may archive the issues for later use.

While there is not much available from the magazine itself, there is extra information on additional projects for those interested in learning. Clicking on these links redirects the viewer to “Jewelry Making Daily,” an expansion of Interweave Press, the publisher of the magazine and various other craft magazines. To experience the site fully, the viewer must sign up to join the website to get the daily postings available on the site.

Also different with the site is the number of advertisements online. The only advertisements displayed appear in a sidebar along the right of the page. There are no interactive graphics going along with the advertisements or hidden elements. Instead, the ads are in an easy place to locate. Several of the ads featured are for other magazines printed by Interweave.

Even after the November issue hit newsstands, no articles became available online. Ultimately, Jewelry Artist decided to place the bulk of the information in print only. Daily blogs and other designs can be accessed daily through the website, but for the larger how-to stories, the audience still needs to turn to print.

Placing these projects online would allow for different multimedia presentations of the project. Videos could show the same step-by-step process in a more interactive way. But if this happened, there would really be no need to print the magazine. This may be why most of the articles are accessed only through the print magazine and are not placed online.
